My name is Carly Guest. I’m a PhD student in the Department of Psychosocial Studies, Birkbeck. My PhD research is concerned with the ways in which young feminist women narrate and remember ‘becoming feminist’. I am particularly interested in the specificities and intricacies of these women’s experiences and so pay particular attention to the affective aspects of feminist becomings.

The emotional labour of political work was evident in the testimonies of the women I interviewed. In particular the experience and expression of anger was a recurring theme across the interviews. I was particularly interested in was the ways in which the women negotiated the terrain between expressing their anger – which offered a productive force for action – and being labelled the ‘angry feminist’.
